Theoretically, a facsimile reproduction contains all informations to reconstruct the original. Our Hokusai facsimiles show not only the images, but also the grainy surface of the paper, traces of the imprint of the woodblock and how the ink was dissolved by the paper. In our case, looking at the facsimiles shows more than looking at the original Hokusai edition.

Why? This is, because the scanner throws the perfect illumination on the paper. Looking at the original in a well lit room, does not show so many details as the scan.

Usually, one enhances graphic works of art for publication. One dramatizes gamma, contrast and sharpness. This presents well on a screen. For our Hokusai edition we did not do this, to preserve the facsimile quality. Before you print downloads, you can always enhance the pictures yourself with almost any graphics editor.

If you download a full Visipix scan and print it 10 by 7 feet, you get a resolution of 600 dots per square inch. Good enough for large posters.
