The Mangas by HOKUSAI, Katsushika (1760 - 1849)
The complete 15 volumes in facsimile quality
World premiere in the internet

The appearance of the printed edition. The picture shows blind persons exploring an elephant. Of course, their description of the animal illustrates the difficulty of all human beings describing true reality. We all are somehow blind, facing the enormous complexity of the world.

Visipix has constructed the complete pictures out of the half pages. The woodcuts do not perfectly fit, therefor we had to modify some details. This is justified because Hokusai himself cared, above everything, for the intellectual idea of a picture and much less for the details. However, he sometimes wrote his editor to assign "better qualified" woodcutters to his publications.

The intellectual idea : This manga is really crazy, because Hokusai paints the scene "seen with the eyes of a blind person".
For Hokusai, the artist is a demon, who can take any position and be whatever he wants to be, he can describe the world with the eyes of a god, or with the eyes of a fly.

We believe, that no other artist before Hokusai had these visions of total artistic liberty.
